Signs of the Bauharoque: Part 1

So its been 30 years since 1977 and this only solidified my reasoning for the following entry. The evolution of cultural figures over the decades often depends on that persons ability to remain relevant to the developing ideas of the culture they probably had a hand in spawning. It came to me while i was getting high and watching cable when John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten appeared in a commercial for a Fuse Tv reality show called Battle of the Bands where Lydon is on of the three panel judges for the show. The comparison was pretty explicit with tag lines comparing his role as the irreverant stubborn judge to Simon Cowell, that now 30 years since his involvement with the Sex Pistols that John Lydon has been reduced from public cultural marquee of punk to being the Simon Cowell of the indy generation's MTV version of American Idol.
Nothing could have been more fitting than to be internetting while watching cable and realizing that i actually still have a tremendous admiration for Malcolm Mclaren because of other projects of his like Bow Wow Wow and helping produce the film Fast Food Nation. upon further surfing i found not only does he still have intelligent things to say about music and fashion but that he recently released a children's clothing line manufactured in Italy based on his growing fascination with chip tunes music. Suddenly all these blocks kept falling into place. 1996 sealed the coffin for any integrity anyone in the actual band might have had with their reunion tour where they drag through the old sounds like propping up a "tired old whore"(zing -Mclaren) all Weekend at Bernie's style. he ended up making the rest of his life a glorifacation of his 70's and 80's fame(as shown in the commercial for BOTB where hes wearing a shirt with the old Sex Pistols logo printed on an oversize longsleeve shrit(ps i thought wearing a shirt of the band you are in was a faux pas obvious enough for even him but whatareyagonnado?)). while Malcolm never got caught up in his image creation, so the 80's through the 00's saw Mclaren wandering his career through such roles as a recording artist, producer, designer, writer and all manner of artist collaborations. so i guess nice benchmark, 2007, you have seen the progressive overturn the relics of later 20th century post-modern pillars and are only gaining more steam for the reality tunnel to be based in the pure, and good.

Charles Stross, Extropy, Etc.

I just finished reading Charles Stross' "Singularity Sky." The most interesting thing about it was how the revolutionary invading "infovore" was modeled on Medieval festivals where the traditional hierarchy was inverted. Good models for Temporary Autonomous Zones and the mystic spaces opened up by a good bit o' performance art. Also, the book led me to this article suspended somewhere in the vast interweb.

WOTD

The Word of the Day for July 01 is:

anchorite \ANG-kuh-ryte\ noun

: a person who lives in seclusion usually for religious reasons

Example sentence:
The anchorite spent most of his days in his small, bare cell, engaged in prayer and meditation.

Did you know?
The term "anchor" was being used for religious hermits about 450 years before "anchorite" came into common use in our language. The reclusive "anchor" and "anchorite" are both derived from the Late Latin "anachoreta," which, in turn, can be traced to the Greek "anachōrein," meaning "to withdraw." Are they etymologically related to the kind of anchors you find on ships? Not exactly. The Latin root of sea-going "anchor," "anchora," probably influenced the spelling and pronunciation of the words that led to "anchorite" and the reclusive "anchor," but it is not a direct ancestor.
